  1. Funny you should be “temporarily” living in DC. Where do you permanently reside?

    • Moving as many times as I have in my life teaches the impermanence of everything…and, indeed, we will quite possibly be moving yet again. Home, however temporary or permanent, is wherever my family and I happen to be living. Home is also beloved but troubled South Africa. I am fortunate too to have U.S. permanent residency. Thank you for asking.

  2. Hi!
Just read your blog on FCPS. Very informative! Most excellent.

One thing it made me wonder is can schools continue to afford to support pensions? I believe that is what got the auto industry in trouble. Maybe they need to convert to higher salaries, 401k’s and no pensions?

    • Thank you for the kind comments. Yes, what you’re suggesting is likely for public school teachers. Certainly, that type of compensation package is the way things are done now in the private sector. In Virginia’s case, especially that of Northern Virginia, the economy is growing healthily so the demographic and other pressures to change are able to be denied longer. In parts of the country where the economy is under strain–such as in Detroit, as you noted–the pressures to modify the pension system are profound and, too often, making the shift is way overdue.
